Focus on one task at a time

Many a times, you feel time is running out and you need to complete several tasks in this short span. However, my friend time is always with you provided you have a disciplined approach and try to complete one task at a time. In this manner, you can achieve excellence in each of your tasks.

In life, you need to carry out several tasks such as education, work, daily chores, family life, etc; lack of focus makes it hard to achieve these goals successfully.

For instance, you try to complete your homework/assignment but are not able to focus as you are reading Whatsapp messages or thinking about a new season of Game of Thrones. You are definitely working hard, but will not progress even 1 per cent in your task towards achieving success. The deadline to submit the said assignment is 24 hours. What happens? You aren’t able to complete the assignment on time and are reprimanded by the teacher, next day.

Even, while writing, I have seen that due to lack of focus I am not able to write 50 words in a single hour. It results in inefficiency.

Hence, focus helps you choose, collect, and interpret accurately the required information to complete a task. Several distractions come in our life to deter from our goal. Following tips can help you:

  • Eliminate distractions: First, find out what is distracting you and get rid of it. For instance, when I write, I switch off my mobile phone and do not access social media. While writing, I do not interact with house inmates and thankfully, they understand and support me. Organize your tasks and prepare well on how to approach them one by one.
  • Deadlines: Set a deadline for yourself. You must have a clear idea about how much time you will take to accomplish the task, based on your potential and skills.
Staying alone helps sometimes, as you are able to focus on your strengths and weaknesses. Find an isolated area and fix a time slot, say, an hour to complete 5% of the task.
Short-term goals help an individual realise his/her productivity and efficiency levels.
  • Find a specific area: Maybe an office, study room, office cabin, cafe, or a library to channelize your thought process. The area should be cozy and comfortable (not so much that you doze off 🙂 wherein you can keep all distractions at bay and focus solely on your task.
  • Music : Usually, people feel music is a distraction but not always. Before writing, I listen to Indian classical music or Coke Studio that rejuvenates my mind; words keep flowing naturally 🙂
  • Reading: Failing to get new ideas to write? Wait! Read a book, magazine, blog or a journal to fill your mind with fresh ideas and perspectives. You can explore an entire new world when you read.

A cluttered mind never helps you. Focus is instrumental in creating our thought process – perception, memory, reasoning and, most importantly, decision-making.

Excellence is a combination of optimism, determination, perseverance, and hard work. Don’t let the spark in you fade away due to lack of focus and a cluttered mind. The FIRE in you will drive your passion and motivate you to achieve your goals successfully. Additionally, multitasking can also be dealt with smartly if you develop focus and time management skills.
